IHG Premier Select vs Premier (2026): Is the New $350 Card Worth It?

•

Chase refreshed its IHG credit cards on October 1, 2026. The new IHG One Rewards Premier Select costs $350 a year, and the existing IHG Premier went from $99 to $150. Both cards now come with a long list of credits, and each card is worth what you will actually use of them.

Our answer: the Premier Select pays for its extra $200 only if you stay at an IHG hotel in at least two calendar quarters a year and buy at least one $250 airline ticket directly from an airline. With one IHG stay a year, it at best ties the Premier. With no IHG stays besides the free night and no airline ticket, the Premier comes out $100 ahead. After 2027, when the airline credits are scheduled to end, the Select needs three quarters of stays to break even.

The three IHG cards side by side

Terms below come from Chase's card pages for the Premier Select and the Premier, checked October 5, 2026. The no-fee card's details come from Frequent Miler.

Premier Select Premier IHG One Rewards (no fee)
Annual fee $350 $150 $0
Free night cap 60,000 points 50,000 points None
Status Platinum Gold Silver
Elite night credits 20 a year 15 a year 5 a year
Food and beverage $75 a quarter $25 a quarter None
Airline credit $200 (through 2027) $100 (through 2027) None
United TravelBank $50 a year $50 a year None
Welcome bonus 200,000 after $5,000 180,000 after $3,000 125,000 after $2,000

Both paid cards give a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS credit of up to $120 every four years and the fourth night free on four-night award stays. Both are World Elite Mastercards. The welcome offers run through November 18, 2026.

What the extra $200 buys

The $200 fee difference between the Select and the Premier buys four things:

  • $100 more airline credit. You get it once a year when you spend at least $250 on flights bought directly from an airline. Chase says this credit runs through December 31, 2027.
  • $50 more in food and beverage per quarter you stay. The Select's voucher is $75 a quarter, the Premier's is $25. Each expires at the end of its quarter, and you need a stay at a participating IHG hotel to use it.
  • A free night capped 10,000 points higher. At 0.5 cents per point that is worth $50, but only if you book a hotel priced above 50,000 points. At a 35,000-point Holiday Inn Express, the higher cap is worth nothing.
  • Platinum status instead of Gold. The Premier reaches Platinum after $15,000 of spending in a calendar year. We put no dollar value on status in the math below, because the value depends on how often you stay.

The United TravelBank cash and the Global Entry credit are the same on both cards, so they don't affect the choice between them.

The break-even

Add up the extra value from the list above and compare it with the extra $200 fee. Q is the number of calendar quarters in which you have an IHG stay.

Quarters with an IHG stay Extra value, through 2027 Extra value, 2028 on
0 $100 to $150 $0 to $50
1 $150 to $200 $50 to $100
2 $200 to $250 $100 to $150
3 $250 to $300 $150 to $200
4 $300 to $350 $200 to $250

The low end of each range assumes the higher free-night cap adds nothing. The high end assumes you book a hotel priced at the full 60,000 points. The "through 2027" column assumes you buy one $250 airline ticket a year.

Two quarters of stays is the break-even: the Select ties the Premier or beats it by up to $50. After 2027 you need three or four, unless Chase extends the airline credit.

That also assumes every voucher is worth its face value. A voucher only has full value when it pays for a meal you would have bought anyway. LoyaltyLobby values the IHG food and beverage vouchers at about 50% of face. At that rate, the Select needs all four quarters of stays to beat the Premier even through 2027. Our coupon-book scorecard explains why we discount credits you have to change your behavior to use.

Three cardholders, priced out

We value IHG points at 0.5 cents, the same figure our Chase transfer partners guide uses. Each free night is valued at its cap times 0.5 cents, so these figures are the most the nights are worth. United TravelBank is left out because it is the same on both cards.

Cardholder Premier, net of fee Premier Select, net of fee
One IHG stay a year (the free night), one airline ticket +$225 +$225
IHG stays in all four quarters, one airline ticket +$300 +$450
One IHG stay a year, no airline ticket +$125 +$25

The first row ties. The Premier gives $100 of airline credit, a $25 voucher and a $250 night, which is $375 against a $150 fee. The Select gives $200, $75 and $300, which is $575 against $350.

The math shows who the Select is for: someone who already stays at IHG properties several times a year, often enough to use a $75 voucher most quarters, and who wants Platinum status without spending $15,000 on a card that earns 1.5% on everyday purchases.

Don't use either card for everyday spending

At 0.5 cents per point, the earn rates are lower than they look. The Select's 3x on everyday purchases is worth 1.5%, and the Premier's is the same, both below a 2% flat-rate card. The Select's 6x on dining and travel is worth 3%, and the Premier's 5x on dining, gas, groceries and flights is worth 2.5%. Our dining card guide lists cards that beat both.

The exception is reaching a spending milestone you value. On the Select, $40,000 in a year earns a second free night worth up to 60,000 points. On the Premier, $15,000 earns Platinum status and 15,000 bonus points. Spending $15,000 at 1.5% instead of 2% costs you $75 in rewards, and the 15,000 bonus points are worth about $75, so on the Premier the Platinum milestone costs roughly nothing if you were going to spend that money anyway.

If you already have the Premier

Frequent Miler reports that existing Premier cardholders pay the new $150 fee at their first renewal in 2027. They also keep Platinum status through the end of 2027, and their 15 annual elite night credits start on January 1, 2027.

Keep the card if you use the free night every year. A 50,000-point night is worth up to $250, which covers the $150 fee before you count the $100 airline credit. If you redeem the night at a $120 hotel and buy no airline ticket, the card nets about zero, and the downgrade decision comes down to whether you want to keep the account's history. The no-fee IHG card keeps the fourth night free on award stays only if you spend $5,000 a year on it from 2027.

Switching to the Select for the bonus may not be possible. Chase's Premier terms exclude anyone who currently holds a personal IHG card or got a personal IHG card bonus in the last 24 months. Read the Select's terms for its own eligibility rules before applying.

Which card to get

  • You stay at IHG hotels in most quarters: the Premier Select. Through 2027 it beats the Premier by up to $150 a year, and Platinum status comes automatically.
  • You stay once or twice a year, mostly on the free night: the Premier. It ties or beats the Select for $200 less upfront.
  • You don't stay at IHG at all: neither. Compare hotel cards across programs first. The World of Hyatt card is the $95 alternative to price against.
  • You mostly want the welcome bonus: the Select's 200,000 points are worth about $1,000 at 0.5 cents, 20,000 points more than the Premier's 180,000, but they require $5,000 of spending instead of $3,000.
