Card Comparison

What's the Best Credit Card for Airbnb? 2026 Rankings by Use Case

Chase quietly settled a long-running question in June 2026: which card earns a real bonus on Airbnb. Effective June 15, 2026, the Sapphire Preferred refresh added 3x points on vacation homes booked directly at Airbnb, Vrbo, and similar brands, and Chase named those brands by hand instead of leaving it to a merchant code.

That makes the $95 Sapphire Preferred the best all-around Airbnb card for most travelers. It is not automatically the best for you. If you want cash back, a no-fee card, or the surest merchant coding, a different card wins. This guide ranks them by use case, with the math for each.

The Quick Answer

Use case Card Direct Airbnb earn Annual fee
Best overall Chase Sapphire Preferred 3x points $95
Best cash back BofA Customized Cash Rewards 3% to 5.25% by tier $0
Best no-fee card Wells Fargo Autograph 3x points $0
Best coding-proof fallback Capital One Venture 2x miles $95
Best for business stays Chase Ink Business Preferred 3x points $95

Welcome bonuses can be worth hundreds of dollars, but they change constantly and say nothing about which card is best for recurring Airbnb spending. This ranking ignores them on purpose.

Does Airbnb Count as Travel?

The recurring trap in Airbnb card advice is assuming every issuer treats Airbnb the same way. They do not. The card network sends a merchant category with each charge, but the issuer decides which categories earn a bonus. Payment processor, regional Airbnb entity, and even a digital wallet can change the result.

So rank the evidence, not the marketing. From strongest to weakest:

  1. Confirmed by issuer. The issuer names Airbnb in writing. Strongest evidence.
  2. Expected by category. The issuer includes vacation rentals or a broad travel bonus but does not name Airbnb. Likely, not guaranteed.
  3. Requires testing. The bonus category exists but the issuer's examples stop at airlines and hotels. Verify with a real posted charge before trusting it.
  4. Does not qualify. The travel bonus is limited to airlines and hotels, and Airbnb is neither.

Each card below carries one of these labels. The whole point of the ranking is that a confirmed 3% beats a hoped-for 4x you might only earn at 1x.

Best Overall: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Chase Sapphire Preferred

Coding confidence: confirmed by issuer. Chase lists Airbnb, Vrbo, Plum Guide, HomeAway, Homestay.com, and Vacasa by name for its 3x vacation-home category. That certainty is the real advantage, more than the rate itself.

The card earns 3x on those brands booked directly, 5x if you book the same stay through Chase Travel, 2x on other travel, and 3x on dining, streaming, and online grocery. The annual fee is $95, there are no foreign transaction fees, and it carries trip-cancellation and interruption coverage up to $10,000 per traveler and $20,000 per trip. For a $4,000 nonrefundable vacation rental, that protection can matter more than a percentage point of rewards.

Here is the honest part. The $95 fee is hard to justify from Airbnb rewards alone. Say you value Chase points at a conservative 1 cent. To earn back the $95 from the extra 1x over a flat 2% card, you would need to spend about $9,500 a year on Airbnb. At the 1.25-cent Chase portal rate, about $5,429. Almost nobody spends that much on Airbnb.

The case for the card is the whole package: confirmed Airbnb earning, transferable points, real trip protection, and everyday value across dining and travel. If you would use only the Airbnb bonus, a no-fee card below serves you better.

One caveat on point values. New Sapphire Preferred accounts now transfer to World of Hyatt at 4:3 instead of 1:1, and existing accounts follow on October 1, 2026. That weakens the program's best redemption, so keep your point valuations grounded. Our Ultimate Rewards transfer guide walks through what points are actually worth now.

Best Cash Back: Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards

Coding confidence: confirmed by issuer. Bank of America lists Airbnb as an example merchant in its Travel category, which you can select as your 3% choice. A standard direct Airbnb charge should earn the bonus.

The card has no annual fee and earns 3% in your chosen category, currently with a first-year promotion that lifts it to 6% for the first 12 months. The rate can climb further if you hold qualifying balances at Bank of America under its 2026 BofA Rewards program:

BofA Rewards tier Qualifying balance Estimated Airbnb return
No relationship None 3.00%
Preferred Plus $30,000 3.75%
Preferred Honors $100,000 4.50%
Premier $1,000,000 5.25%

Treat the boosted rates as estimates. Bank of America renamed the program in 2026 and has not published the exact new boost percentages, so the 3.75% to 5.25% figures are our best read, not a guarantee.

The catch is the cap. Bonus rewards apply to only the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter, and that $2,500 is shared with grocery stores and wholesale clubs. One $3,000 booking blows past it, and the overflow drops to 1%. This card rewards steady, modest Airbnb spending, not a single large reservation. It also lacks the trip-cancellation coverage of the Sapphire Preferred, which is worth weighing on an expensive nonrefundable stay.

Best No-Fee Card: Wells Fargo Autograph

Wells Fargo Autograph

Coding confidence: expected by category. The Autograph earns unlimited 3x on travel with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. Wells Fargo defines travel broadly, including airlines, hotels, car rentals, cruise lines, travel agencies, and campgrounds, so Airbnb generally earns 3x. Wells Fargo does not name Airbnb, so it lacks the brand-level assurance Chase and Bank of America give.

For an uncomplicated, unlimited, fee-free card, this is the pick. There is no category to select and no quarterly cap. The tradeoff is protection: the no-fee Autograph does not carry the trip-cancellation and interruption coverage found on pricier travel cards, so a delayed or canceled expensive trip is on you. If you want a broader no-fee shortlist, see our best no-annual-fee cards.

High Upside, Verify First: U.S. Bank Altitude Connect

Coding confidence: requires testing. On paper the Altitude Connect is the strongest earner here: 4x on travel, no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. But U.S. Bank's travel examples stop at airlines, hotels, car rentals, taxis, trains, and cruise lines. Airbnb and vacation rentals are not listed.

That leaves two open questions. Will Airbnb reliably trigger the 4x category? And what is each point worth when you redeem it? Four points is not the same as 4% until you confirm the redemption value.

We have not run a live Airbnb charge on this card, so we will not claim a rate we cannot back up. Treat the Altitude Connect as a promising honorable mention until a real posted transaction confirms both the category and the point value. That first-party test is worth running before we crown the card, rather than repeating forum reports. One more note: this is the Altitude Connect, still open to new applicants. Do not confuse it with the Altitude Reserve, which closed to new applications in 2026.

Coding-Proof Fallback: Capital One Venture

Capital One Venture

Coding confidence: confirmed, by design. The Venture and Venture X earn 2x miles on every purchase, so a direct Airbnb booking does not depend on any special travel classification. It never drops to 1x because of a merchant code.

A reliable 2x sits below the 3x and 3% options above, so this is not the card to open specifically for Airbnb. It is the right answer when you already hold it, or when you want one predictable rate and no category games. The Venture X, at $395, only makes sense if you use its travel credits and lounge access. For that comparison, see our best travel cards guide.

Best for Business Stays: Chase Ink Business Preferred

Coding confidence: expected by category. The Ink Business Preferred earns 3x on travel and select business categories on the first $150,000 of combined annual spend, with a $95 fee. For Airbnb reservations tied to legitimate business travel, employee lodging, conferences, or project assignments, it earns the same transferable points as the Sapphire Preferred.

The charge must have a real business purpose, and you should keep receipts and trip records. Do not route personal vacations through a business card. Our best business cards guide covers the wider lineup.

Cards to Skip for Airbnb

Chase Sapphire Reserve. Direct Airbnb earns the base 1x, and the June 2026 refresh that added 3x vacation homes applied to the Preferred, not the Reserve. If you already hold the Reserve, use its $300 annual travel credit on Airbnb before anything else, but the $795 fee makes it a poor card to open for Airbnb. The cheaper Preferred now earns more on direct bookings. We ran the full Reserve math here.

Citi Strata Premier. Its 3x travel bonus covers air travel and hotels, not a general travel category. Airbnb usually codes as something other than a hotel, so it does not reliably earn the bonus. Does not qualify.

Hotel-branded cards. Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, and IHG cards save their top rates and elite benefits for stays with their own programs. An Airbnb earns none of that. If you want hotel perks, our best hotel cards guide is the place to look, not an Airbnb ranking.

Bilt cards. Bilt overhauled its lineup in 2026 after Wells Fargo exited and issuing moved to a new bank. Older Bilt data points no longer apply, so we are leaving Bilt out of the Airbnb ranking until current terms or a live test show a reliable bonus. Background in our Bilt Card 2.0 review.

Run Your Airbnb Numbers

Advertised multipliers do not tell you which card nets the most on your spend. Enter your annual Airbnb spend, your biggest quarter, and your assumptions below. The calculator ranks the cards by net value after fees, flags the Bank of America quarterly cap when a booking exceeds it, and marks the Altitude Connect's coding as unverified. Points default to a conservative 1 cent so the result does not tilt toward premium cards.

Airbnb Gift Cards: Useful or Overcomplicated?

Airbnb accepts major cards, and depending on your location, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal. You can also pay with Airbnb gift cards, which do not expire and can be combined with another payment method.

Gift cards occasionally beat direct payment, but only in narrow cases: when you buy them at a genuine discount, during a card's elevated category offer, or from a store where you earn a much higher bonus. Outside those cases, skip the complication.

The downsides are real. Funds lock into Airbnb. Refunds return to the gift-card balance rather than your card. And paying part of a trip with gift cards can reduce or complicate travel-insurance eligibility, because less of the expense is charged directly to the covered card. Check the benefits guide before you split a payment. The defensible rule: use discounted Airbnb gift cards only when the discount clearly exceeds the rewards and protections you give up.

Quick Decision Guide

You want one card that does it all: Chase Sapphire Preferred. Confirmed 3x on Airbnb, transferable points, and real trip protection for $95.

You want cash back and spend modestly: BofA Customized Cash Rewards. Pick Travel as your 3% category, mind the $2,500 quarterly cap, and take the higher rate if you have a BofA balance.

You want no annual fee and no fuss: Wells Fargo Autograph. Unlimited 3x on travel, no category to pick.

You already have a 2x card and one big booking: use it. A reliable Capital One Venture 2x beats gambling on a bonus category that might pay 1x.

Your stay is for business: Chase Ink Business Preferred, for legitimate business travel only.

Bottom Line

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best overall Airbnb card in 2026 because Chase confirmed the 3x rate in writing. The certainty is what sets it apart from cards that merely fold Airbnb into a broad travel bonus. Its $95 fee earns its place from the whole package, not from Airbnb rewards alone.

For cash back, the BofA Customized Cash Rewards is the pick, especially with a relationship balance. For a no-fee card, the Wells Fargo Autograph. And treat the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect as a high-upside card that still needs a real transaction to confirm it, rather than a guaranteed 4x.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Airbnb count as travel on a credit card? Not always, and it depends on the issuer. Chase names Airbnb explicitly for its 3x vacation-home category on the Sapphire Preferred, and Bank of America lists Airbnb as a Travel category example. Other cards fold Airbnb into a broad travel bonus without naming it, so the bonus is likely but not guaranteed. A few cards, like the Citi Strata Premier, limit the travel bonus to airlines and hotels, and Airbnb usually does not qualify.

What is the best credit card for Airbnb in 2026? For most people booking directly on Airbnb, the Chase Sapphire Preferred after its June 2026 refresh added 3x on vacation homes at Airbnb, Vrbo, and similar brands. It has a $95 annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and strong trip-cancellation coverage. For cash back, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards; for a no-fee card, the Wells Fargo Autograph.

Do you earn 3x or 5x on Airbnb with the Sapphire Preferred? Booked directly at Airbnb, Vrbo, Plum Guide, HomeAway, Homestay.com, or Vacasa, you earn 3x. Booked through the Chase Travel portal, the same stay earns 5x as a portal purchase. Secondary charges like separate cleaning fees can be excluded.

What is the best cash-back card for Airbnb? The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card. Choose Travel as your 3% category and Airbnb qualifies. The rate can rise to an estimated 5.25% for Premier-tier relationship customers, but bonus rewards are capped at $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter across your category, groceries, and wholesale clubs.

Does the Chase Sapphire Reserve earn bonus points on Airbnb? No. Direct Airbnb purchases earn the base 1 point per dollar on the Reserve. The June 2026 change that added 3x vacation homes went to the Sapphire Preferred and left the Reserve at 1x. If you already hold the Reserve, use its $300 annual travel credit on Airbnb first, but do not open the $795 card specifically for Airbnb.

Are Airbnb gift cards worth buying for rewards? Only when the discount clearly beats what you would earn paying directly, and you accept the tradeoffs. Gift-card funds lock into Airbnb, refunds return to the gift-card balance, and paying part of a trip with gift cards can complicate travel-insurance eligibility because less of the cost is charged to the covered card.
